    Hello nice people. Happy Monday.

We went to a school district multicultural fest to see a friend of Simon's do the Chinese lion dance. (Virus scare be damned!)

My car had an oil leak and it's gonna cost $675 to fix. Ugh.

Working from home today while it's in the shop.

Max Von Sydow finally lost his game of chess with death. He was 90.

My favorite was always his narration in Zentropa, which was in second-person.

"You are on a train. You are in Germany. You are cold."

Dispatches from Elsewhere is the single twee-est show ever made. If Zooey Deschanel starred in a musical version of Amelie scored by Belle and Sebastian and directed by Wes Anderson, it would not be this twee.

But, uh, I kinda like it. So much is horrible right now. Needlessly convoluted whimsy feels like a corrective somehow.

I reserve the right to change my mind and hate it before it's over though.

On one hand, that's excellent news: it means that it makes no economic sense to exploit unconventional and very polluting oil sources, like the Saudi Albertan tar sands and reservoirs located up in the arctic or in deep water. But, on the other hand, it means people are probably going to keep on burning oil as if there's no tomorrow, ensuring that there won't be a tomorrow.

I guess this Covid-19 shit is playing havoc with the tourist industry...

Hey, guess who owns a bunch of hotels?

Now would be a very good time to have an administration without half of its major roles empty or staffed by interim people unvetted by Congress. Now would be a terrific time to have leadership that respected scientists, made them part of its high-level decision making, and knew when to defer to them. Now would be an exceptional time to have an executive office without extensive conflicts of interest in the travel and hotel industries.

Italy: This COVID-19 thing is going to be hard on everyone. How about individual taxpayers all take a few months off from paying their mortgages and reconvene in summer? We don't want to hit regular people in the pocketbook.

US: Now is a good time for more tax breaks for businesses and corporations. Think of the shareholders!

I think that we all agree that the most important thing is bailing out the beleaguered hotel industry, right?

Anyone who has ever experienced the days off/health care policies of the US restaurant industry can tell you there is no way this will be contained. No days off without doctor's notes, no health care to get doctor's notes, still get fired if you miss too many shifts.

I reckon they're testing too many people. I mean, if they didn't test so many people we wouldn't have as many cases, no?

I've been able to get through the lessons a little faster on my fingerpicking vid. The latest has a tricky turnaround that's a little confusing for my left hand. I'll probably get through this vid in a few months or less. I'm not sure where to go after that. I'll probably try to learn to use a pick again. I've tried using a thumb pick, but it's awkward and I lose patience and I end up taking it off.

I suppose I could try to learn some fingerpicking songs. I'd like to be able to learn to play Don't Think Twice, It's All Right.

I don't want to learn Dust in the Wind.

    Why not?

I don't like the song, and I've always found it annoying when people pick up a guitar and start playing it.

Even though he doesn't actually sing the song, I like Billy Bragg's version of Just Walk Away Renee.

I'd like to figure that one out.

Does he explain why he's teaching the song? Sometimes music teachers want students to learn a song not because they like it, but because they think students will learn something useful from it.

Oh, Dust in the Wind isn't one of the lessons.

And yes of course, you learn a song to practice sixths and thirds, another to practice walking bass lines. The reasons for the songs he picks are pretty clear.

If we ever met, I'll demand that you to play it and that you sing it. With feeling!

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind, All we are is dust in the wind
Don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind, All we are is dust in the wind

I hope you're not just now figuring that out.
