The Lincoln Project are con artists but this is still a hilarious video:

Well, good things are done for bad reasons all the time, you know?

Long read, but looks at literally every aspect of the coronavirus response in the US. I hadn't realized how fucked we already we're in January.

Also, there is the French connection. Paris and Bordeaux had cases arriving from China around January 18-22 but France has also retroactively identified a case who was infected with COVID in mid-December and was admitted to a hospital just outside Paris on December 27th. The customers at my work are predominately young Parisians. It was the holidays. My store is very claustrophobic and very busy during the winter. It's possible that somone flew in from Paris carrying COVID during those weeks and it was circulating among people who were asymptomatic or assumed it was just that bad flu that was going around. We weren't doing community testing and Quebec was slow to respond with testing even once they knew it had arrived.
Ok, I mean, the first confirmed official case was I late February, but everyone seems to think that the virus was circulating before that. I remember you were quite worried about infecting your mom. How's she doing?

In Quebec, the virus killed thousands of old people in nursing homes. Whistleblowers had been repeatedly warning the government that nursing homes were understaffed and underfunded for years and years, and nothing was done.

At the beginning of this pandemic, based on the MERS and SARS epidemics, I thought that people were exaggerating, that we would go through it ok... I was wrong. I had no idea how unprepared we were to face this.

I was checking the Teachers Retirement System and I found out I have 3 more years before I’m eligible for retirement. I thought it was 5. I hope my program and I can survive that much longer.

It probably wouldn’t be enough to live on in this country, but if I moved somewhere like Costa Rica, I could live pretty well.
  • Jurf_WurburJurf_Wurbur Posts: 4,042
Costa Rica sounds nice. Better than this shithole country anyway.

Good morning gentlepersons. Back on the beat. Stacey's dad's house was STUFFED with decades worth of junk. But we managed to clear it all out. Lots of cute/hott pics of S____ were in the stacks.

How's your worlds? (besides the utter implosion of most of our nations?)

Everything is just peachy. I’m spending the day trying not to think about returning to work tomorrow. Boy, that’s gonna be weird.

    Strewth! Good luck, Ev!

Yes, best of luck. I hope that it's as low on stress/weirdness as can be achieved right now. I have so many friends that are teachers and I struggle with the balance of wishing them well and saying "this bullshit". Particularly my Florida teacher friends who are getting seriously jerked around with constantly shifting sands down there.

It’s good to have a source of income, but I don’t wanna get sick. Maybe Jesus will protect me.

Jesus would be a great name for an insurance company. “You’ll feel secure knowing you’re protected by Jesus.”

My mom has survived thus far. Knock on wood. She has all sorts of lung issues and has sleep apnea and is overweight and is turning 75 in October... she's in many high risk categories, so I worry about her constantly.

The day I learned that I most likely had it, my girlfriend learned that the cousin of her Jewish grandfather in Florida had COVID-19 and was being moved into palliative care. She had just flown down to celebreate his 100th birthday a few weeks before the lockdown. He passed a few days ago.

M______ is struggling with the job search. Basically, her industry (events) no longer exists. She can't get comparable jobs in different fields because her experience is unrelated and lower level jobs are turning her down for being overqualified.

New York attorney general seeks to dissolve NRA in suit accusing gun rights group of wide-ranging fraud and self-dealing

I dunno, personally, instead of financing gun-crazy wingnuts with it, I'd rather have Wayne LaPierre embezzling NRA money and using it on blow and hookers.

Ha. That's a pretty hot take.

Listening to audio of the speeches at a "Save the Children" march (which is just rebranded QAnon to avoid being shutdown on social media platforms) in L.A., I've begun tilting in the direction of feeling the U.S. may be a lost cause or failed state. The levels of ignorance, terror, hatred, pseudoscience, misinformation, disinformation, superstition, fear, confusion (political and otherwise) are shocking, even for someone who has been watching the decline over decades now.

One second they are shouting about 'waking up' and fighting for the children who are being trafficked (they never specify which children or where they are located, just the abstracted "save the children") by the globalist elite, they next they are telling the crowd to share their water with the person next to them because "they aren't going to get that fake disease covid-19, are they?"

"NOOO!!!" the crowd yells in response.

Later, a speaker tells the crowd, "The vaccination is the Mark of the Beast. It is not a chip. What they do is, they modify your DNA, a piece of your DNA that you were born with will be removed and filled with a coded piece of DNA that will literally make you listen to everything that they say and take it for fact. They are already trying that. What do they need to do next? Literally tie it into your DNA. It's called "Luciferus 666"; are you going to put that inside of you?!!!!"

A large chorus of "No"s before the move into a chant of "NO VACCINATIONS! NO VACCINATIONS! NO VACCINATIONS! NO VACCINATIONS! NO VACCINATIONS! NO VACCINATIONS!"

How long until there are murders of immunization workers like we see in developing nations?

Sorry to hear about M____. PBS just did a big round of job cuts and decimated their team of event planners. So not only few openings in that area, but flooded with candidates, I'm sure.

    Big fat JP's for her.

This is the audience he is playing to at this point because he knows that a) he's lost a significant chunk of the 'moderate republicans' (i.e. better educated, wealthier but just as ruthless) he can mobilize the paranoid white suburban petty bourgeoisie to vote for him even if the air was literally on fire.

I just really do not see how this election should possible go off without violence in the streets, no matter what the outcome.

A key ingredient is that, without a strong economy and employment numbers to campaign on, Trump has been reduced to a campaign that is purely comprised of fear tactics. In a two-prong approach, he has a display of military strength for the cameras in Portland etc. while he runs ads telling them that they are literally going to die in Joe Biden's America. The message is simple: "Look how I am protecting you from the leftist and BLM marxist mobs in Portland. If I'm defeated, Joe Biden isn't going to just let them burn down America."

Shit, that's awful. Sorry to hear this.

I hope M____ can find a job soon. That is a stressful situation. My sister hadn't worked in about 17 years and just got a job teaching at a Catholic school. I don't think her husband is even looking for work. He hasn't worked since he had that heart attack and was technically dead for however many minutes that was. I don't know if he could get a job because his synapses are not firing the way they're supposed to. I keep telling him to apply for disability, but I don't think he has. The worst that could happen is he would find out he doesn't qualify. I don't know why he doesn't try it.

I don't know if the U.S. will become a 'failed state.' All I can do is vote and try to stay employed. And keep exercising. I'd rather just drink and swallow benzos.
