In March 2018, Hughes, who believed the Earth was flat, propelled himself about 570 metres (1,875 feet) into the air before a hard landing in the Mojave Desert.
More than 2000 years ago (around 240 BCE), Eratosthenes of Cyrene, a librarian at the Library of Alexandria, not only knew that the Earth was spherical, he was even able to calculate the circumference of the Earth without stupidly killing himself!
Let's just say that Mike Hughes was no rocket scientist.
And talking about stupid: MSNBC’s Chris Matthews compared Sanders victory in Nevada to Nazi Germany overrunning France in 1940: “It’s too late to stop him … it’s over”
Nah, Chris, wrong comparison. See, you should have used the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, or the Khmer Rouge taking over Cambodia or even the Soviets invading Afghanistan! 8-|
If a Trump supporter thinks it's accurate to call Sanders a communist, then I think we should feel free to employ the same kind of accuracy and call Trump a nazi.

I saw this headline but didn't realize it was THAT guy.
I don't celebrate death, but I will merely comment that the Earth got slightly less willfully ignorant today.
Apparently, he was attempting to launch himself 5,000 feet into the air on a steam-powered rocket when his parachute failed.
Now, if all he wanted to do was go up 5000 feet, he could have just climbed up a tall mountain. Therefore, he was either really stupid or the flat Earth malarkey was just a marketing schtick. Let's hope it was the latter.
I dunno. If someone wants to see the horizon curve around them, going up 5000 feet is not enough.
There are numerous ways to ascertain that the Earth is spherical. Sure, going high up and seeing the horizon curve is one of them, but it's probably one of the dumbest ways to figure that out.
I guess it's just Matthews being all contrarian and shit, you know, a maverick, telling it like it is. Hopefully, Limbaugh will be dead soon, and someone has to fill the void. 8-|
I've been watching Picard. Liking not loving it. Patrick Stewart is pretty much just playing himself. Picard is supposed to be a bit more stern. The way he's playing him now he's eh, kindly. I'm not super-thrilled about what they did with the Federation. I get that Trek has always commented on the times but one thing we all like about it is it shows a way through all this crap. Having the Federation reflect the Brexit-state etc doesn't sit right with me. Also the writers don't seem to know their Trek history. Nobody lives in poverty on the Earth anymore. One of the new characters is a recovering drug user living in a cool futuristic trailer and she acts like the system left her behind or something. That's not the way it's suppose to go. On Earth, anyway, they've done away with money. I guess they can say that's still the case and this character is just choosing to live this way. I could go on. I want to like it but so far it's kinda Ehnn..
Also they're dealing with the fallout of the Romulan homeworld's sun going super-nova in Abrams crap Trek. They're acting like the supernova wiped out all of the Empire. The Romulan empire is made up of a LOT of worlds. Losing Romulus wouldn't upend everything.
One thing I'm curious about is whether or not Vulcan still exists. Nero friggin blows up Vulcan in Crap Trek but I want to see if they say that's an alternate timeline (which is not how things usually work on Trek but I'll take it this time). OR this is the Kelvin timeline where there hasn't been a planet Vulcan for about 125 years.
I watched the first 3 seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. A bit too theatrical for my taste, but it's entertaining enough. I probably wouldn't have bothered with the 3rd season if my sister hadn't goaded me into it. I just get burned out on stuff, even if I like it. When I binge, I get full and don't wanna have anymore. I haven't been motivated at all to watch the 3rd season of Stranger Things.
I never binge watch anything, I don't have the time nor the patience. I watch one hour of TV per day, two hours tops on Sunday: we like to watch movies on Sunday afternoons.
Remember the SARS coronavirus? It affected thousands in 17 countries and it had a fatality rate close to 10%. The present coronavirus is closely related to the SARS coronavirus, but it has a fatality rate estimated to be 1 to 3%. They both mostly kill old people and people with an impaired immune system.
Yet, I have the distinct impression that people are freaking way more with this coronavirus outbreak. I think the difference in attitude is caused by the fact that the SARS thing happened in 2002-2003, before social media took over our lives.

And that Maginot Line just failed again.

Infotainment, eh?

In total, the CDC estimates that up to 42.9 million people got sick during the 2018-2019 flu season, 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died. That’s fairly on par with a typical season, and well below the CDC’s 2017-2018 estimates of 48.8 million illnesses, 959,000 hospitalizations and 79,400 deaths.
Of course, that's not in the news and, as far as I know, there are no cockamamie conspiracy theories about it.
It's going to feel challenged to prove you wrong!
