Well, someone sucks. Banks suck for charging a stop payment fee.

    Banks suck, full stop.

Speaking of sucking, just finished my taxes. Once again Trump's withholding estimates sent to employers were far lower than they should've been (giving people the false impression they got a boost to their paychecks) so we got soaked.

I saw it coming in Feb, so S___ and I both padded on extra withholding to try to break even next year.

I wonder when the administration will start rounding up Dems and putting them in cages.

Fuck. A young girl I used to work with just posted a screencap on Instagram urging all of her friends to rush to YouTube to watch some 80-minute 'documentary' titled "Out Of The Shadows" writing "The amount of evil in this world is terrifying!!! So many powerful people are truly evil nasty motherfuckers. Do ur research & understand that there is sooooo much they are hiding from us!!! they depend on us to stay willfully ignorant!!! This shit aint no conspiracy the amount of proof is undeniable"

Having learned recently that Zoomers are getting into Pizzagate/QAnon at an alarming rate, I tracked down the video and watched all 80-minutes of it. After peddling a bunch of familiar entry-level Operation Paperclip/Operation Mockingbird/Gulf of Tonkin/MKUltra conspiracy stuff, Liz fucking Crokin popped on the screen and started laying out fucking Pizzagate/QAnon. This bullshit conspiracy theory video made by a brain-damaged stuntman after some evangelical doctor made him born again after he shattered his pelvis has already had 16,474,211 views in three months.

I really feel that this NWO conspiracy theory shit went from being a problem to being an actual threat to 'liberal democracy' since COVID started.

I guess “doing ur research” means watching videos made by and for loonies.
  • matthewmatthew Posts: 421
Yeah, that's precisely the problem. The video is made by someone who did exactly the same thing. It's a chain of dumb.

It all comes from the belief that Trump can't be wrong. But Trump is so often obviously and dangerously wrong that the true believers have to go to ever more absurd lengths to make Trump be right, reality be damned!

The QAnon bullshit has become a magnet for crackpot ideas: they've pretty much adapted nearly all the classic tropes of older conspiracy theories to their needs. It must be the greatest crossover event in conspiracy history, the first grand unified conspiracy theory!

Here's an hourlong vid that makes you orbit the Moon, and I have no idea how it was done. But it's mesmerizing and a welcome change from all the doom and gloom.

Jesus. Had to look that up. It gets a lot worse than that clip. Rubber bullets, tear gas, antagonizing the crowd, refusing to identify what agency they represent, the whole shootin' match.

In better news for hipster old dudes...

Rhino is putting out a three disc Pleased to Meet Me reissue in October. Won't be as radical as the Don't Tell a Soul one, since the original released mix isn't garbage. But it will have all of the Bob Stinson versions of those tracks that exist.

The Replacements still make me feel good.

    What's everybody doing this weekend!!???
  • captqitncaptqitn Posts: 3,629
I finally have something interesting. The fellahs are arriving this afternoon and we've got a secluded cabin out in Western Maryland near Deep Creek Lake we're spending a few days at.

In 2020 the cure for cabin fever is a cabin.

    That's awesome.

I asked Simon what he might like to learn about since quarantine is boring. He said "epidemiology."

This feels of a similar vibe somehow.

A cabin in the woods? Could be nice, or it could be a scary movie. I’m hoping it’s not scary.

Took a dive off the wagon on Wednesday and climbed back on yesterday. No big deal.

This weekend will be the same as last weekend. Hanging out at my mom’s, braving the grocery store, and trying not to think about going back to work.

I don't want to give them too much credit, though.

They're just parasites who realized they were killing their host too quickly.

The stock market is so insanely disconnected from reality right now. The endlessly flowing trillions from the Fed have completely inoculated them. They are going to throw the biggest hissy fit in American history when that starts to slow down.

There’s a ‘What are you reading?’group on Goodreads. I posted the title of the book I’m reading, The Tudors by G.J. Meyer. Some woman named Barbara replied that she’d like it if I posted more about the book than the title. My reply to that:

Well Barbara, it’s a book about the Tudors, innit? I almost left it at that, but I posted a little more. I mean, c’mon. If I posted that I was reading a book called Richard III, I don’t think anyone’s going to be left wondering what it’s about. “Oh, Richard III? It’s a coming-of-age story about an African American girl set in Mississippi at the end of the Jim Crow era.”

In more (eventually) hopeful news, I joined my firms Pro Bono team. Got assigned to an interesting case.

Local guy was helping his uncle cut down a tree in his yard. The local tree police (natural resource enforcement) rolled in, gave them a ticket for not having the right permit. While they were running his license, he showed up on an ICE watch list. They illegally detained him for two hours awaiting ICE agents. ICE took him directly to detention center where he's been for over three months with no due process.

We not only won the case, but the judge found it egregious enough to force the Tree Police to pay our fees. Almost a half million. (which is where I come in as the billing specialist).
